Indulging at Yeast, A Viennoiserie Bakery in East London
When traveling outside of the United States I marvel at the abundance of freshly baked bread and tiny cups of smooth espresso readily available at my fingertips. I’m flabbergasted by how simple it is to grab a warm baguette or croissant alongside a cappuccino. I have accepted that as long as I live in the states, that’ll most likely never be my reality, but I do dream.
As I traversed through some of London’s coolest outdoor markets - Columbia Road Flower Market and Broadway Market - I stumbled upon Netil Market, the former home of Yeast Bakery. I turned a corner and the smell of bread filled my nose, igniting my senses, and I followed the trail to an airy industrial building that was abundant with classic pastries, baguettes, loaves of bread, and delicious doughy treats that I had never seen before. I squealed in delight!
Established in 2011, the family-run specialty Viennoiserie bakery found success as a top supplier to boutique cafés, high-end hotels, and restaurants across London. Yeast’s initial goal was to make “the perfect croissant”, an intense dream that has led many to madness but helped develop their loyal clientele. Since its inception and expansion, Yeast has maintained its ethos of focusing on simple and quality ingredients, while combining craft, care, and attention to detail with each new recipe.
Yeast bakes their scrumptious goods every morning and delivers daily to a variety of cafés, restaurants, and delis across London. Their newest location, moving from Netil Market in the summer of 2021, is open to the public and beloved for its dining options as well as its interior, sporting blush pinks and pops of brutalist concrete. This stylish bakery is an ideal spot for a coffee link-up, cute lunch, or when you simply want to indulge in a delightfully flaky crust.
