Columbia Road Flower Market - Exploring One of London’s Oldest Markets
In my world, solo travel means vigorously exploring a city on foot from morning to evening, with few breaks in between. My itinerary consists of the best places to dine, stunning architecture, galleries and museums, and always, the best markets and shops a city has to offer. Exploring farmers’ markets, flower markets, and grocery stores invigorates my spirit and fills me with renewed life. While abroad, I am utterly enamored with markets and the potentiality of what I might find.
Gorgeous London is historically known for its exquisite markets across the sprawling city. I was eager to investigate as many as I could during my stay. During my pre-trip research fawned over vibrant photos snapped at Columbia Road Flower Market in East London’s Bethnal Green, near Brick Lane and Spitalfields. Considered one of the oldest markets in all of the city, this Victorian neighborhood's crown gem was near the top of my destinations list.
On Sunday mornings from 8 am - 2 pm, Columbia Road transforms into a flower lover’s paradise. The fragrances of roses, lavender, and seasonal buds draw you in as you near the street. The bounty of beautiful flowers by the bucketful is poetry for the eyes. Popular with both locals and tourists alike, the vibrant market is packed during the midday rush with folks eager to buy flowers, herbs, and houseplants or to simply experience the beauty of the picture-perfect historical market.
Columbia Road is also home to 60 independent shops, including galleries, bakeries, vintage clothing boutiques, and antique dealers. For those seeking sustenance, there is an abundance of pubs, cafés, and restaurants to choose from, along with Italian and English delis. It’s a lovely destination with much to offer.
