Los Poblanos Historic Inn & Organic Farm

Los Poblanos Hotel New Mexico

I think about my first adult trip to Albuquerque, New Mexico a lot. Typically when I daydream about a vacation of years past there is a noteworthy hotel that made an impression on me; it acts as a touchstone for all of the other memories from that trip. Where I lay my head means so much and it often elevates the entire travel experience. Los Poblanos Historic Inn & Organic Farm is my first choice when staying in Albuquerque. This boutique hotel feels nearly like a sanctuary, situated atop 25 acres of the property’s lavender farm. Because my life prior to COVID had always been so fast-paced, I was drawn to the opposite in my hotel selections. I preferred relaxed, quiet, and slow. Even more so today, moving in slow motion feels like a luxury I had deprived myself of for so long. My stay at Los Poblanos allowed me to appreciate life more.

When staying at Los Poblanos I felt connected to the Earth, nature, and myself. Every day I’d wake up to 2 beautiful peacocks walking the grounds as I made my way to breakfast. It was a great reminder of how beautiful life can be if you take the time to appreciate all of the elements. The hotel offers superb complimentary breakfast for each guest upon their stay. Each morning I was thrilled to see was James Beard-nominated Chef Jonathan Perno had prepared for us. There were always a couple of options and I typically wanted both! That is how delightful the kitchen was.

Jonathan has been nominated six times as a semi-finalist for a James Beard award and is a strong advocate of the Farm to Table philosophy. He is a butcher, farmer, beekeeper and has trained many cooks to become great chefs, many who now run kitchens of their own. [source]

I must emphasize how special it is to stay at a hotel that focuses as much attention on its design as to its food and beverage program. This is not standard protocol although many hotels would like to believe their restaurants are special – Los Poblanos dining actually is. Even if you’re not a guest, you can experience brunch, dinner, drinks, or tea service through one of their dining options, which I’d highly advise. Los Poblanos was ranked by Bon Appétit as a "Top 10 Hotel for Food Lovers in America" which I can attest to.

The property offers spacious rooms and suites to choose from. I stayed in a Meem Deluxe Room which felt like my own personal retreat tucked away from the world. Equipped with its own fireplace, the cozy room quickly felt like home. The rustic design of terra cotta and dark woods encapsulates the New Mexican aesthetic in a luxurious way. The vintage-tiled bathroom complete with a soaking tub is perfect for late-night unwinding. The garden view can work wonders for your spirit. Los Poblanos allowed me to step away from the chaos of the world.

The Meem Rooms & Suites are located behind the historic and renovated hacienda designed by New Mexico’s most important architect, John Gaw Meem. A style attributed to him, the “Territorial Revival” rooms include 1930s revival tin light fixtures, hand-carved beams, ironwork, hardwood floors, hand-plastered walls and fireplaces and period New Mexican artwork.

Not too far from your front door is a cozy shop located in a barn on the property. Do you feel like you’re in a Nancy Meyers film yet? Filled with charming housewares, Southwestern selects, and beauty products produced from the on-property lavender farm, you’ll find yourself needing to make room in your luggage before you depart. Their bath and beauty products are especially nice to give as a gift from your travels. Back at home, one dollop of Los Poblanos lavender lotion immediately whisks you back to the farm.

When you’re looking to book in Alburquerque this is the best hotel for charm and understated elegance. It is fondly burned into my memory and I cannot wait to return.
