Dining with a View: Inside the Stylish Seneca Roman Trattoria in San Diego
One of my best friends moved to San Diego a couple of years ago and it has inspired me to regularly drive down the 5 fwy to join her in exploring the relaxed coastal city. When I’m in town, I put together a robust itinerary that includes new places to eat and drink, along with a list of artist spaces and cultural experiences that I want to delve into. Seneca, a Roman-style trattoria, developed by the prolific hospitality group Consortium Holdings was on my radar and the new warm weather motivated me to book a reservation.
With decades of dining behind me, I’ve come to understand that each restaurant serves a purpose. At Seneca, the big draw is that it’s a stylish rooftop destination overlooking the North San Diego Bay. The food, neither spectacular nor bad, is the supporting actor to the sky, water, and view around you.
Food & Drinks at Seneca Trattoria
Although I came for the waterfront view, I was equally excited to witness the tableside hand-stretched mozzarella service I had seen hyped on socials. I appreciate a playful element in my dining experience and love that Seneca is focused on providing their customer with a jovial show. As delightful as it was to see cheese curds form into a white ball of fresh mozzarella right before my eyes, I was underwhelmed by the taste and tough consistency of the cheese once it was plated. Thankfully it was paired with heavenly housemade focaccia, which instantly elevated the dish.
I ordered a cappuccino and the table enjoyed a round of captivating cocktails. Both Seneca’s coffee and spiked libations satisfied our urges. If you’re seeking a vibrant environment to grab drinks and light bites with friends or a date, I’d make the recommendation.
Our plates consisted of Truffle Arancini, Wood-Fired Prawns, Misticanza Roman Salad, and Pepperoni and Margherita Pizzas. The truffle arancini made from creamy risotto and black truffles was a savory treat to kick off our meal. The wood-fired prawns were too saucy for my taste and the salad lacked personality. I enjoyed the pepperoni pizza but wasn’t enthused as I have been with Quarter Sheets Pizza or Pizzeria Sei back in L.A. I was satisfied with lunch but didn’t end the meal feeling inspired for dessert. The best part of our experience was the vibe, view, and drinks.
Seneca Trattoria is located on the 19th floor of the Intercontinental Hotel Overlooking the Water.
The Scene
The scene at Seneca was buzzing with power lunching San Diego locals, eager tourists, and stylish Mexican women. It was refreshing to hear so much Spanish at the restaurant, one of the things I enjoy about being so close to the border. The gorgeousness of this rooftop restaurant can draw in the influencer type and large groups of ladies looking to celebrate a moment.

Service
I experienced superb service while dining at Seneca. The staff is inviting and friendly, in addition to being attentive. Mozzarella service is a fun tableside experience although I believe it’s been discontinued.
