Taste the Legacy: Wine Tasting at Stags' Leap Winery in Napa Valley
Napa Valley, lovingly referred to as America’s wine country, is a region renowned for its picturesque vineyards and world-class wineries. It is a necessary destination for wine enthusiasts and connoisseurs in the Western Hemisphere. Among the many gems that grace this scenic valley, Stags' Leap Winery is a Napa classic that offers an intimate wine-tasting experience. On a recent visit to this historic estate, I was transported into a world of sensory delight and oenophilic wonder as I sipped from the diverse collection of Stags’ portfolio.
The legacy of Stags' Leap Winery runs deep. The estate's roots trace back to the late 19th century when it was founded by the Chase family. Its Victorian-style manor, lush gardens, and century-old vineyards make it a destination not only for wine but also for history aficionados.
At Stags Leap Winery, the focus is on crafting wines that truly reflect the unique terroir of the Napa Valley. The winery's vineyards are planted on some of the most sought-after land in the region, with a range of soils and microclimates that allow for the production of a wide variety of grape varietals. Stags’ is perhaps best known for its Cabernet Sauvignon, which is consistently ranked among the best in the world. However, the winery also produces a range of other varietals, including Petit Sirah, Merlot, and Chardonnay.
The Tasting Room
On my visit to the estate, I indulged in the Manor House Experience (cost $95 per person), which consists of an intimate 90-minute tour & tasting that explores the history of the property, its unique terroir, and its elegant wines. I had the immense pleasure of sampling six of Stags' most recent offerings, each with its unique flavor profile and characteristics. I sipped on the 2020 Viognier, which has since become a staple in my home, 2020 Barrel Select Chardonnay, 2018 Coombsville Cabernet Sauvignon, 2018 Twelve Falls, 2018 Ne Cede Malis, and their exquisite dessert wine, 2016 Late Harvest Napa Valley White Wine. The staff guided me through each tasting, explaining the nuances of each wine and sharing interesting facts about the winemaking process.
Stags' Leap offers tasting experiences in both indoor and al fresco settings, featuring a charming porch that overlooks the picturesque expanse of the vineyard. The tasting room welcomes guests seven days a week, but due to limited capacity, reservations are crucial to secure your spot on the property.
