Breakfast at The Dez, Croissants and Espresso in Joshua Tree

The Dez Menu Joshua Tree

As I regularly travel to the high desert it means that I’ve become well acquainted with the popular culinary destinations from Yucca Valley to 29 Palms. For years I have relied on staples like The Natural Sister Cafe and Crossroads Cafe in Joshua Tree to satisfy my breakfast and brunch urges, but I always found myself longing for more. When La Copine opened in Flamingo Heights it felt like a dream come true. They had me at the first bite of their fried chicken and has since become a mandatory stop on any of my trips to the Mojave.

On my latest visit, I was eager to stop by The Dez Fine Food, a more recent addition to the Joshua Tree area. Although a tiny corner market and to-go cafe, I was impressed with their menu options and was giddy to scour their walls lined with gourmet snacks like chocolate, jams, and nuts. Having opened in November 2020, I cannot imagine it has been easy establishing a new business during the global pandemic. On my trip, however, The Dez was rarely without a long line so it is my hope they’ll continue to flourish during these uncertain times.

The Food

I arrived on the early side of New Year’s Day eager to order an extra hot vanilla latte made with oat milk. I was momentarily enticed by the idea of trying a Golden Milk Latte or flavorful chai, but I wanted to start 2022 with pipping hot Stumptown espresso, the beans they serve exclusively.

Mindful of the spike in Covid cases, The Dez limited capacity to 3 at a time, which allowed me a moment to get familiar with their offerings. With any first visit, my order was large, ensuring that I would have a proper tasting of the cafe. An Everything Bagel with cream cheese, a BLT Tartine, a Spinach Quiche, 2 Chicken Sausage Rolls, 2 Croissants, and a Curry Cous Cous salad. Thankfully the consumption was not a solo endeavor. My partner and I eagerly awaited our breakfast as we sat on a bench outside the Dez, enjoying our hot coffees on what felt like a terribly brisk morning. Too cold for comfort but this was grab and go, so we made due.

Although I was underwhelmed by my tartine and my partner griped about his bagel - he was previously an LA Westsider – I took great pleasure enjoying every morsel of the quiche which was deliciously fluffy. The sausage roll albeit incredibly rich and heavy for a morning meal was bursting with scrumptious fatty flavor. The croissants sufficed because they’re a rarety in Joshua Tree but I couldn’t help but yearn for the perfect croissant Sundays I’ve experienced at Bobs Well Bakery in Los Alamos, one of my favorite dining destinations. We saved the curried couscous salad for later, anticipating we’d take a lunch break inside Joshua Tree National Park. This deli treat would end up being the favorite of our selection as it was diverse in texture and bold with flavor. My partner, originally from North Africa, was pleasantly surprised by their couscous offering.

I am excited to have another dining option off Route 62 and on my next visit, I look forward to trying lunch at The Dez Fine Food. From what I’ve gathered, they offer well-plated charcuterie plates, a variety of deli salads, and an array of sandwiches made with what appears to be freshly baked bread. I love having a meal to look forward to.

The Scene

Due to the scarcity of gourmet food in Joshua Tree, The Dez can be quite a scene on weekends, so be prepared for a small wait. It’s possible that you might run into someone from back home if what you call home is Los Angeles.

Service was exceptional and one of the standout reasons that I am looking forward to returning to The Dez. As someone who now leaves the house seldomly (due to the pandemic), I am especially mindful of how I feel in spaces. Life is fragile and I only want to be in places that feel warm and welcoming. I possess free will and that is a decision crucial to my new way of living. At The Dez I was taken aback by the time, attention, and warmth given to my experience and order. The staff was lovely to converse with, insisted that I take my time and the woman who conducted the space, had a genuine kindness that radiated in our interaction. Any questions that you may have, I’m sure they are happy to answer.
