The Salk Institute for Biological Studies is a world-renowned research institute located in the stunning coastal neighborhood of La Jolla in San Diego, California. It is also my favorite building in Southern California. The history-making institute was founded in 1960 by Jonas Salk, the developer of the first safe and effective polio vaccine. Salk selected one of the most celebrated architects of the 20th century, Louis Kahn, to design the research facility.

Considered one of the most important modern American architectural sites, the Salk Institute is a brutalist masterpiece. The buildings are made of concrete, glass, and travertine marble. The structures are arranged in a series of terraces that overlook the Pacific Ocean. There are a total of 29 structures that come together to complete Salk. The Institute is not only a gorgeous place, but it is also a functional one. When designing the Institute, Kahn aimed to create a space that would facilitate scientific discovery. The buildings are designed to be energy-efficient and to minimize disruption to the natural environment. The are open and airy, with plenty of natural light. Concrete walls are smooth and unadorned, providing a blank canvas for the scientists to work on. The stunning travertine courtyard is a place for scientists to gather and discuss their work.

Salk Institute was declared a historical landmark in 1991. In 2022 the Salk Institute made headlines when it hosted French luxury house Louis Vuitton’s Cruise 2023 collection.

Visiting Salk

Visitors are welcome during normal business hours, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Pre-registration is required. All self-guided and docent-led tours take place outside. The Institute is closed to visitors on weekends, holidays, and occasionally for private events.

Visitor Parking

There is no public parking available for visitors and tour attendees on the Salk Institute’s campus. Salk encourages guests to use free parking along Torrey Pines Scenic Drive or in the Gliderport parking lot. Paid public parking is available at the Sanford Consortium lot, which is located just across the street from the Salk Institute. The current fee is $3/hour.
