Hotel June Los Angeles
When my boyfriend suggested we celebrate our one-month anniversary with a day at the beach I took that as an opportunity to suggest a staycation. I thought it would be far more enjoyable to book a room near the coast than to deal with the drive back home from the Westside. In terms of hotels available in the Manhattan Beach area, there isn’t much that suits my taste. From my research, Hotel June appeared to be the best fit, and it was just a few minutes away from where would we be in the sand. Poking around Hotel June’s website and Instagram, I was able to surmise that it wasn’t a luxury property but it was the best designed in the area. Touted as a boutique hotel that encompasses the free-thinking spirit and soul of California, I was excited to experience it as a guest. Hotel June is a sister property of Proper, the hospitality group behind the gorgeous Santa Monica Proper, so the attention to detail fits. One might even refer to the Hotel June as Proper’s diffusion line.
Hotel June is a mere 8-minute drive from Manhattan Beach. Cruising up the 1 with the drop-top after a day on the sand cuddling, kissing, and eating was très parfait. We arrived at the hotel and I opted for self-parking ($25). Parking was simple which is always appreciated.
It was quiet on the property, understandably due to the global pandemic. The lobby was the most impressive element of Hotel June which I imagine is a great welcome for anyone checking in, especially those who have just flown into LAX. I have noticed an uptick of hotels focusing their energy on the design of communal spaces, particularly the lobby, with the hopes of providing instagrammable moments for their guests. I support this shift if it also means that hotel rooms mirror that same energy, but more often than not, hotel rooms are becoming increasingly underwhelming and lacking in the high design apparent everywhere else on the property. I observed that at Hotel June.
Hotel June refers to itself as a boutique hotel but unfortunately, there are no robes, slippers, or special amenities inside the rooms. The toiletries looked dated. Nonetheless, the property absolutely nailed it with their choice of mattress in the room which is the most important part of any stay. They made the right investment here and I can promise a good night’s rest. After a day in the sun, crips white sheets chilled by air conditioning feel like perfection. We stayed in a corner standard king city view which was dead silent, it felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. The rooms are clean, modern, and bright albeit underwhelming. If you are looking for a safe place to rest to your head this will do.
I am not entirely sure what the standard room rate is at the Hotel June considering COVID has changed the price of almost everything and continues to fluctuate. As of today, you can book a spacious king for $209 excluding taxes and fees on their website. At the time of our stay, we booked a room for $106 a night on the app Hotel Tonight. Unfortunately due to COVID all of the dining options and pool were closed which renders this experience incomplete but since then, everything has re-opened up at the property. I look forward to returning to check out their bar and restaurant, as they seem to be creating some exciting collaborations and events.
