Dorados, Monterey Park

Dorados Ceviche BarThough Fall has officially arrived on the calendar, here in Los Angeles we are still enjoying summer weather. With warmer temperatures, I find happiness with an ice-cold agua fresca and of course one on my favorite dishes, ceviche. I had been anticipating the grand re-opening of Dorados, which is now Dorados Ceviche Bar and it was well worth the wait.  Owned by the culinary masters behind Cooks Tortas, located just further down the street, Dorados has boasts some of the best ceviche in Southern California.

Upon arriving at the ceviche bar I scanned the minimal menu, a deli case showcasing beautiful bowls of freshly prepared ceviche and a barrel of the finest sandia (watermelon) agua fresca.  My eyes quickly found the “ceviche sampler” (just under $10) which entailed a serving of all the ceviches-of-the-day.  If you are a ceviche lover like myself or just want a taste of the whole gamut, I highly recommend the sampler.

My two favorites of the ceviche, though all incredibly tasty, were the Agua Chile (spicy shrimp) and Pulpo Escabeche (octopus).   I’ve documented my love for pulpo on this here blog and it was such a delight eating Dorado’s take on it. We ordered a couple tacos for good measure and while tasty, I’d say go all out and get ceviche everything!

Mariscos Uruapan, Irwindale

Irwindale, Californiapulpo (ocotpus) ceviche

I never thought I would be writing that the best mariscos I have eaten came from a spot in Irwindale, California, but it is true.  Not that there is anything wrong with Irwindale, it is just that I had no idea there were any restaurants there.  If you are familiar with this city, located just off the 605 between the 210 and 10 fwy in L.A. county you might know what I mean.  This city boasts industrial rock pits, car-parts malls and a speedway, but now I find myself driving out there frequently to enjoy what has become my favorite ceviche in Southern California.

If you read my fish taco article for Refinery 29 L.A. you already know that I love me some mariscos (seafood) and will drive all over this town to find the tastiest plate I can.  I am particularly fond of Mexican and Latin-American ceviche; there is something about that lime flavor that just sends me over the edge.  Paired with a giant plate of oysters, and you can pretty much call it an evening. I am so thankful I stumbled upon Mariscos Uruapan which has everything I want and more – fresh seafood, friendly staff, drink specials, and a mariachi band.

For those hot sauce lovers (like my boyfriend), Mariscos Urapan has you covered with variety to choose from at your very own table.  I was inspired by this selection to try some on my oysters which resulted in an incredible moment of seafood ecstasy.  For the record, hot sauce + oysters = guaranteed deliciousness.

Irwindale, California true or false: I drank 3 of these

You have not lived unless you have tried queso fundido, serioso mi amigo.  Listed as a botana (appetizer) on the menu, I must warn you that once you get started on this melted Mexican cheese dish paired with freshly made corn tortillas, you just might quickly become too full to eat anything else. Topped with a savory chorizo and it will make it even harder to resist ordering up another dish of this heavenly creation.

Are those big oysters or what?  Not many places can order up a dozen oysters for around $10 and enjoy every bite.  I was so thankful I went with people who really love their mariscos so that we could order a variety of different plates, including what was the largest plate of oysters I have ever seen.
