KTCHN DTLA at The Gorbals

Brunch plans this weekend? I’ve got you covered if you are in L.A. homie. I recently hit up KTCHN DTLA at The Gorbals, which you also might know as KTCHN 105, and this is a must try brunch spot. I am thankful my boo Joanne has her ear to the ground on all things Downtown L.A. We rolled up on a Sunday around noon without reservations and told we’d probably have to wait over an hour because there was no room. Neither of us are high maintenance (when it comes to dining that is) and asked the hostess about a cozy corner we peeped. She said “people don’t usually want to sit there because it is so small” and our response was “we’ll take it.”

The menu changes often and on our visit there were so many delectable plates to choose from: White Sea Bass Crudo, Apple Fritters, Habanero Scramble, and Braised Short Ribs N Eggs. Since I had a heavy dinner the night before I was in the mood for something light and fresh so the Big Ass Salad looked perfect. With that kind of name I knew I was in for salad extravaganza and it proved to be note worthy, packed with avocado, beets, hearts of palm, orange, grapefruit, pistachios, garbanzos, cucumber, tomatoes, and red onion, tossed in a pumpkin seed vinaigrette. I especially loved that on the menu it read underneath “no you can’t have it any different then that, yours truly chef Felix…”

Thankfully Joanne was in the mood for something savory and ordered the Huge Salted Pork Belly N Eggs which I had also been eyeing on the menu. True friends let each other have a bite of their dish so I was tickled pink knowing I’d have a taste. Served with two organic fried eggs, home fries and brioche, this dish sounded like the winner of the menu. When I took a bite of the pork belly I literally hunched over in my seat and moaned.

This white bowl of wonderment totally caught my eye but I couldn’t eat another bite. Thankfully my new pal Tittsworth indulged in this beauty on a separate occassion and gave me permission to use his photo. Dude, do you know how bad I want those Brie Grits right now? That looks like magic in a bowl, packed with berry compote, topped with apple julienne and bourbon cherry granola. I hope they still have this on the menu the next time I swing by!

On Tuesday evening I was invited to MoKo’s “Open House” social hour; I was happy to receive the invite as a friend told me days earlier about this cool new spot in Culver City.  I wasn’t sure what to expect from a restaurant that described itself as Modern Korean Social Dining but as soon as I arrived I quickly understood the concept and once I saw the food, I knew I was going to enjoy myself.

The atmosphere was pleasantly airy and relaxed, a combination that welcomed the idea of sipping on some MoKo Punch, which was a glorious combination of soju, vodka, persimmon cinnamon tea, watermelon and pineapple.  Definitely unlike any drink I’ve ever imbibed before. Lingering in large modern serving bowls on the communal tables were two different ban chans that were my favorite treats of the evening.  I couldn’t get enough of the Sweet Lotus, honey braised with sesame and soy, and the Market Radish Namul, with sweet ginger and pineapple mint (pictured above).  I often claim I could eat pickled radishes every day for the rest of my life, these only further cement my claim.

Dishes began coming to the table, made fresh, one by one.  With each plate I was taken in with the vibrant colors and savory smells.  This Crisp Pork Belly bun made with spicy cress, Asian pear in jjin bahng, sesame aioli and gochujang was delightful.  Pork belly is usually a hit for me and I am so thrilled it has made its way on to every menu in L.A.  Mixed with crunchy greens and hot sauce makes for a perfect four bites.  Savory but yet light, this handled pork pleaser is a must for a summer lunch date.

The Watermelon Namul made with toasted almonds, shiso and ginger was a fantastic dish to end an already enjoyable evening of modern Korean plates.  As a Mexican American Angeleno, I am no stranger to watermelon cubes topped with chile as that’s a dish I have been eating since I was a kid. MoKo’s take on crisp watermelon with spice was successfully executed and already has me thinking of ways to replicate the recipe.  A simple dish is often times one of the best.  For a refreshing bite this coming summer, I definitely recommend you try this.

Keep in mind, this spot does not serve up traditional Korean faire nor a totally budget friendly menu if you want to order a lot of plates.  Come knowing you’ll be spending some cash, but you’ll have strong and delicious drinks accompanied by some very delectable ban chan.
