The Scent of Baja

Baja Candle from Barneys

I love candles that remind me of the sights, smells, and feelings from the places I have traveled.  With Fall teasing us here in L.A., I have been prepping my candle game and this Baja candle from Barneys New York has been my go-to as of late.  Created by famed French candle manufactuer Cire Trudon, exclusively for Barneys, this candle marries star anise, jasmine, lily of the valley and white honey.  I wish you could take in the aroma through the screen and be transported to the beautiful rolling hills and crystal clear Sea of Cortez of Baja California Sur.

What candles are you loving?

Update: Congrats to Maria Alyssa for winning the Lomography Camera Giveaway. Thank you to everyone who entered.  Keep checking back for more fun Fall giveaways.

Tacos, Baja California

Cabo San Lucas Food al pastor at Taqueria Los Paisas de los Cabos

I ate A LOT of tacos while in Baja California Sur and this is a collection of my favorite taco plates.  My meat preference is usually carne asada and al pastor, with a hint of lengua here and there. While eating at the Taqueria Los Paisas de los Cabos I was treated to something I hadn’t eaten before, puerco de espinazo (pork spine), and it was one of the most delicious cuts of meat that I’ve ever tasted.  This savory dish wasn’t served in a taco but instead as a complimentary appetizer simply bare on a plate.  I sucked on those bones as if I were a rabid dog, that’s how tasty it was.

Tacos cost around $1.20 – $1.50 in Baja California (more than L.A.!) so you can bet I was living it up in taco heaven.  The amount of taquerias might seem overwhelming to some but for me it was like being in a culinary wonderland and I let me nose do all the navigation.  If it smelled great and I heard meat sizzling, I knew that was the place I’d be pulling up a chair.

La Paz, BCS Mexico

La Paz Vacation

La Paz, BCS Mexico is such a beautiful city that it was incredibly difficult for me to leave.  The city is surrounded by beautiful sand and water, has delicious food on every corner, and isn’t overrun by tourists.  La Paz holds a special place in my heart because my grandmother always escaped down there for a little relaxation and a cold beer.  While staying with mi familia, they showed us an album they kept of mi abuelita that contained photos of her visits in La Paz and correspondence she sent them from the states.  It brought tears to my eyes and was a bittersweet moment for me.

If you follow me on twitter you have read about how much I LOVE agua frescas; I could live off of these Mexican juices and paletas alone.  While visiting a typical open market in La Paz I scooped up a delicious cup of sandia (watermelon) and couldn’t have been more happier.

La Paz Vacation

Todos Santos, a town we visited on the drive to La Paz is famous for its dulcerias (candy shops).  I enjoyed browsing the vibrant packages of candy, marshmallows, and empanadas.  Shops like this really had me wishing that we had something like this back in the states. Just look at those herbs! It was all so beautiful.

It was such a great feeling being able to swim at a beach in the evening.  The sun was out, the wind was blowing and the water was warm.  Just looking at that landscape photo brings total relaxation and makes me appreciate how lucky I was to be in such a beautiful place.  This beach was one of our cousin’s favorite spots and it was easy to see why.  I wish I was there right now.

Asael found this puffer fish skeleton while hanging on the sand.  How amazing is that little face?
