Did you know there was a castle in L.A.? Neither did I until last week when I visited Rubel Castle in Glendora. The 1.7 acre property was constructed by the eccentric Michael Rubel and after his death it was left to the city. The Glendora Historical Society has picked up where Rubel left off and gives private tours on occasion, which I was fortunate enough to partake in.
Here are some snaps I took while on the tour, and while it was a bit long (with a bit too much talking), I did enjoy perusing the grounds and exploring the vicinity. Rubel’s friends used parts of bicycles, tires, shovels and cemented them in between the river rock that makes up many of the compound’s walls. With chickens running around and a clock tower chiming every 30 mins, this is definitely a fun spot to experience.
