What’s Cookin?

My love for food, rap, and all things rad have come together courtesy of Bankshot & LRG. Major props go out to Eli of Thrift Eye for tweeting this video my way.

About the video: Conventional wisdom tells us not to talk with our mouth full, but no one ever said anything about pieces of food rapping along to some of the best culinary lines in hip-hop history. The latest short from production duo BankShot with music by DJ Nick Castle finds a stop-motion film that shows everything from pancakes and bacon to a green pepper with a platinum grill lip-synching along to classic lines from Biggie Smalls, Guru, Raekwon, Q-Tip, Action Bronson, Method Man and a whole lot more notable emcees. Dinner is served. Directed by Bankshot, Music By DJ Nick Castle

The Rum Diary

The Rum Diary Review

I saw The Rum Diary last night and to say it was a disappointment would be an understatement.  Being a fan of Hunter S. Thompson, this book, and knowing it took 7 years to make this film no doubt cultivated some expectations within me, but even if I was unfamiliar with this story, it would still be a bad film.

On a positive, which I had already gathered from the trailer, was that the film had been beautifully shot and the wardrobe was impeccable.  Set in late 1950s Puerto Rico it was such a delight to see cat eye sunglasses, vibrant fabrics and full swimsuits.  Amber Heard’s character, Chenault, looked flawless lying on the deck of her mid-century modern home and really lit up the screen with her bright red lips and stunning ensemble.  If you see the movie for once reason, see it for the fashion and the beauty of Puerto Rico.  One thing is for sure, the film inspired my sartorial choices for my vacation to Puerto Rico next year!

Melancholia

Melancholia, Lars von Trier

My Fall calendar is always filled with at least one film a week, and if I told you how many I usually see in the theater a year, you probably wouldn’t believe me.  The whole process of movie-going is something that will always be special to me as it was often a family activity and helped create many fun memories as a child.  I have only became more in love with film as I have grown older. If you were to read my sophmore yearbook of h.s. there is a student feature on yours truly where I go on and on about film and I say “I only watch independent films” and that I want to “film a documentary about a laundromat.” I was 14, so I’m cutting myself some slack but I still think it is pretty rad.

I have been eagerly awaiting Lars von Trier’s Melancholia, a dream-like film about the end of days starring Kirsten Dunst and Charlotte Gainsbourg.  You can watch the trailer here.  Trier’s films are visually stunning, intense and always end horribly for the female protagonist.  If you’re wondering, I don’t think he’s a misogynist and I’ve yet to see Dogville.  I’m willing to open a discourse on that if you’re interested though.  How beautiful are these screen shots?

Update: Congrats to Kaycie Eddie for winning the Laura Ann’s Jams Giveaway. Thank you to everyone who entered. Keep checking back for more fun Fall goodies!

La Piel Que Habito

La piel que habito

Last night I had the pleasure to be in attendance at the kickoff of Variety Magazine’s film screening series.  To my surprise and enjoyment, they choose Pedro Almodóvar’s new picture La Piel Que Habito (The Skin I Live In).  Intense would be an understatement for the film and if you’ve seen any of his others, you know exactly what I am talking about.

Almodóvar is one of my favorite directors because he manages to capture the complexities of women, in their ambition, sexuality, and despair.  Actress Elena Anaya is incredible in her portrayal of Vera Cruz but I must stop there as to not give anything away, this film is filled with twists and turns.  The beauty in which you come to expect in any Almodóvar film is present here as it ever was, with bright prints, impeccable decor, methodical hospital scenes, and bold fashions on the female characters.  La Piel Que Habito might be my favorite Almodóvar film since Todo Sobre Mi Madre, or maybe my favorite Almodóvar of all time.  You must see it this October!

Rodarte at Cinefamily

Tonight I’m going to see sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy, who you know best as the founders of Rodarte, at the Cinefamily (link) to present a “double-header of ‘double’ movies”! These ladies know their film and I’m so pleased that chose to show Krzysztof Kieslowski’s masterpiece The Double Life of Veronique and Brian De Palma’s insanely good Sisters.

One of the things I love most about the Mulleavy sisters is their support for the arts, especially film, music, and literature. If you didn’t catch them on KCRW last week, I suggest you listen to their “guest DJ” show (listen here). They rule, that’s all there is to it … and they live up the street in Pasadena.

Charlotte Rampling

It has been a long time since I’ve bought a magazine (save, The Gentle Woman) but that doesn’t mean I still don’t hang out at the newsstand checking out what’s new in the world of print fashion. V Magazine rarely disappoints and I was thrilled to see the gorgeous Charlotte Rampling featured in their “Age Issue.”  Her talent onscreen is undeniable as is her beauty; it makes me happy that there remains an appreciation for this woman.

I especially love Charlotte in Swimming Pool, please check it out if you haven’t already seen it. It is streaming on Netflix too.

Are you excited about this as me? What is your favorite scene?

Sofia

The moment I saw The Virgin Suicides in the theater, I knew I was in love with Sofia Coppola as a filmmaker.  Not only is her talent evident behind the camera, but her sense of style is beyond. She has always embodied a relaxed and confident look, so when I see her name attached to something, I’m delighted to see what it is all about.  By no means am I a Louis Vuitton enthusiast, but when I saw this ad, once again Sofia managed to pull me in with a simple photo.  Apparently, advertising works.

I read something really cool about Sofia today, something I didn’t know.  She and Built by Wendy designer Wendy Mullin are friends and vacation regularly in the south of France.  In her upcoming film, Somewhere, Elle Fanning spends much of the film wearing Mullin’s spring ’09 striped tankdress. I’ve been so looking forward to seeing it.

What do you love most about Sofia?

Top That!

Tonight I am thrilled to be attending Cinefamily’s Pajama Party Part II: Bitchcraft!, which is a double feature of THE CRAFT and TEEN WITCH. As someone who never threw out her Scott Cunningham books on everything Wicca (are you listening Christine O’Donnell?), I am so looking forward to reliving my junior high school desires to be as cool as Robin Tunney and Fairuza Balk. For the lighter side of witchery, you’ve got Teen Witch which has developed a cult following over its rap scene known as “Top That.”

Last year Rachel Antonoff released an homage to “Top That” starring Alia Shawkat. Her lovely clothes paired with one of the cutest girls in Hollywood was a total win. Here’s the video in cased you missed it the first time – I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did!

Have any stories of your teen witchdom?
